Built in about 1937 by L.Ranzini of 74 Via Rembrandt, Milano, Italy. One of the many hand built bicycle artisan's based at the time around the streets that surround the famous Vigorelli Velodrome in Milano. The address is still in Milano according to Google Maps and street view.
We know of one other bicycle made by this maker, this bicycle was a racing bicycle of c.1948 and is equipped with a Campagnolo Cambio Corsa gear. This was sold by us in 2010 privately.
This bicycle has a 22.1/2" (57cm) frame in original condition with remains of the makers transfers and insignia still evident. Interestingly the frame number is 00 which is stamped on the off-side rear drop-out. Is this number 1 of a model or was this Ranzini's own bicycle to get his shopping on.???
700 x 35c wheels with alluminium rims and quick release wing nuts, steel hubs, flat steel handle bars with integral brake levers, Argus rear wheel lock, Ranzini steel chainset with Magistoni bottom bracket, Universal alluminium brake calipers, Mercurio of Milano leather saddle which measures 30cm x 14cm. Interesting bottom bracket mounted tyre driven dynamo made by C.ABBATI of Milano powering the front and rear lamps. (NOT WORKING).
The mudguards are alluminium and painted black and the rear guard has a flat section on the top with slots. We can only assume that this was designed to carry a rain cape or small tool roll and secured by two leather straps using the slots in the guard.
Although in good condition, this bicycle would benefit from a clean and overhaul. The handle bar grips are missing but we have suitable rubber grips available here.
Altogether a very interesting and rare Italian bicycle which is lightweight and beautiful at the same time.
