For sale here is an Umberto Dei racing bicycle, made in around 1960 in Milan, Italy. This iconic Italian manufacturer has been making bicycle frames since 1896, and the brand name still exists today making modern yet retro designed bicycles. We believe this model to be a 'Superleggera' lightweight, with frame number: 71A1749 and having a 22" frame.
The bicycle is equipped with Campagnolo Nuovo Record groupset - first seen in 1966, so more than likely fitted to the bicycle later. The Campag groupset includes the front and rear derailleur shifters and selector levers (down-tube mounted), 6.3/4" fluted cranks, alloy saddle post, bottom bracket, head set, chromed quill pedals with toe clips, and the frame clips for the brake cables and gear changer cable routers. The hubs are both Campagnolo Record large flange front and rear. Brakes are both Universal on the front and rear, with Modolo drop bar levers on which the brown rubber hoods are hardened but not split.
The chrome work featured on the frame is in excellent condition, with very little surface corrosion. All the chrome clips are also in excellent condition. The front head transfer is unfortunately fairly worn, however all the others are very clear.
Perhaps the most striking feature of this bicycle is the drilled chain-ring. Most likely this would have been done to lighten it, but also for aesthetic reasons, as it adds an interesting and unique feature to the bicycle.
The drop handle bars and stem are both Cinelli, with a width of 15" ( around 38cm) on the bars, and a reach of 4" (around 10cm) from the stem. Also featured is the Premier 220 saddle (slightly worn). The rims on this bicycle are of an unknown manufacturer due to the lables being not present or worn too much to read.
A rare and pretty racing bicycle from this classic Italian maker.
