For sale here is a 1908 'Retro-Direct' ladies 21.1/2" loopframe bicycle.
The unique feature of this bicycle is the gearing mechanism - in which the rider pedals backwards for a lower gear and forwards for a higher cruising gear. The system works by having two chains running to opposing single-speed free wheel sprockets. When one is engaged and driving, the other is free-wheeling, and vice-versa when the rider pedals backwards engaging the lower gear. A consequence of this is not being able to wheel the bicycle backwards as the two gears conflict and lock the wheel. Advantages of this design are numerous, including having a gearing system where the chain can not de-rail from the sprockets (as can happen with Derailleur systems).
This bicycle is in original condition, with us being only the 3rd owner from new, but would benefit from a minor overhaul if it were to be ridden (new crank as one is odd, brake blocks, little bit of TLC). The original owner had a name plate made and put on the bicycle, which is still present and included.
Other features of this bicycle include the 28 x 1.3/4 wheels with the manufacture's name plate still attached to the rims, and the French made Michelin tyres. The handlebars are Nickel plated, and the bicycle is fitted with calliper brake systems front and rear. The rear steel mudguard has holes drilled either side in order to thread a skirt guard around the wheel.
